We’ll skip the part where we lecture you about the importance of writing a will because you’re already here, so obviously you know that it matters. Instead, let’s talk about the different ways you can prepare your will in Malaysia. Don’t forget that once you’ve written your will, you can store a digital copy of it or help your family locate the original copy on Bereev.
#1 – Traditional Will Writers
Companies like Rockwills, As-Salihin, AmanahRaya and so on offers your typical will writing experience. You can either go through one of their agents or visit any of their locations to get it done. Going through them can easily cost you anywhere between a few hundred ringgit or up to thousands, depending on how many ‘modules’ or clauses you need.
#2 – Online Will Writers
Over the past few years, we’ve seen plenty of online will writers popping up here and there. This option will likely cost a lot cheaper than going to the traditional will writers and their prices typically start at the RM200 range. Some of the players in this space include CreateWills, SmartWills, Alpha Will Services 等等。
#3 – Banks & Insurance Companies
How many of you knew about this? But most banks and insurance companies in Malaysia actually offer either offline or online will writing services. The price for a basic will by Maybank2u in 2014 cost around RM298. Here are some quick links to the will writing services on Public Bank, Hong Leong, RHB, and Tokio Marine.
#4 – Lawyers
Probably a more suitable option for either high net worth individuals (HNWI) or people with more complex estates is to go to lawyers or a legal firm that specialises in estate and family law. Here are some options we’ve found online; TYH & Co., MahWengKwai and Associates and Low and Partners.
#5 – DIY
As long as you’re 18 years old or above, are of sound mind and have at least 2 witnesses lined up (witnesses must NOT be a beneficiary), you can actually write your own will and save all that money. In fact, here’s a free legal will kit, created by Kenneth Khoo, an advocate and solicitor of the High Court of Malaya.
There you have it! 5 different ways to write your will in Malaysia, ranging from completely free to spending thousands of ringgits depending on your needs. So no more excuses, time to get at least a basic will written otherwise our government will have you to thank for adding on to the RM8,800,000,000 of unclaimed money that’s currently sitting at Bank Negara.
